Municipal Works Australia’s 2026 Annual General Meeting highlighted strong membership growth, expanding professional development opportunities and a renewed Board as the association continues to strengthen its national presence.
Held online on Tuesday 27 October and chaired by Mauro Starc, the AGM reviewed the association’s performance during 2025–26, approved its audited financial statements and formally noted the election of Brad Byrne and Jade Jones as Elected Directors.
Membership and participation grow
MWA reported 2,174 local government members, up 53.6 per cent from 2025, representing 347 councils and other local government organisations. Corporate membership rose 11 per cent to 141, with growth in every represented state.
The association recorded more than 2,574 attendances across its events and activities. These included 1,222 webinar attendances, 511 attendances at field days and regional events, and 139 site tour participants. Nine travel award recipients received support, while promotional tours reached 94 councils.
The flagship Municipal Works Conference in Bendigo, held on 18–19 March under the theme Resilience and Reinvention, attracted more than 600 local government attendees and over 100 exhibitors.
Financial results and governance
Members approved the 2025–26 financial statements, independently audited by Davidsons Assurance Services. Revenue rose 9% to $935,766, with an annual surplus of $24,632, down from $116,150 the previous year. Higher costs accompanied the expansion of MWA’s national program.
At 30 June 2026, MWA held $454,265 in cash and cash equivalents and net assets of $450,296. Diversifying income remains a priority, with conferences and awards generating approximately 73 per cent of revenue.
The meeting also reflected on MWA’s transition to a company limited by guarantee on 16 April 2026.
Board renewal and future priorities
Members elected Brad Byrne and Jade Jones following an electronic ballot. Their appointments follow the retirement of Peter Donato and Steve Van Orsouw, whom MWA thanked for their many years of dedicated service. The association also acknowledged fellow candidate Sairam Jegatheeswaran and all members who participated in the election.
Guided by its 2026 Strategic Plan, MWA will expand training and professional development, develop mentoring and peer networks, and increase participation in underrepresented states. Greater support for rural and regional councils, along with new partnerships and services, will extend the association’s reach and deliver more value to members throughout the year.
