Municipal Works Australia: A Remarkable Transformation Recognised

Municipal Works Australia (MWA) was nominated for the Most Improved Association category at the prestigious 2025 Associations Forum Awards, held at a gala dinner on 6 December 2025. The nomination recognises five years of extraordinary growth, reform, and renewed purpose that have transformed MWA into one of Australia’s most dynamic and forward-looking member associations. Since 2020, MWA has undergone a remarkable transformation driven by a clear strategic vision, strengthened governance, and a strong commitment to member value.

Successive strategic plans have guided rapid organisational growth, supported by a modernised constitution and a comprehensive governance framework. Financial equity has more than tripled, membership has surged across both local government and industry, and education and events have expanded through initiatives such as the leadership development program, Municipal Works Learning, and the rapidly growing National Conference and regional Field Days. Advocacy efforts through the VCCIA have amplified MWA’s influence, while strengthened communications and outreach have significantly increased sector visibility. With a more diverse and capable Board and a culture focused on inclusion and professionalism, MWA now stands as a contemporary, high-performing association.

Also on the night, MWA long-serving Board Member and Life Member Ray Leak was inducted into the Associations Forum Hall of Fame, recognising her outstanding contribution to industry associations over 35 years.
